Austin Thyroid now offers VO2 Max testing, in addition to DEXA Body Composition testing performed by our exercise physiologist.
Proper training at your VO2 Max improves your body’s power grid. It strengthens your heart, improves blood flow and metabolism, and makes your muscles more efficient. Vo2max testing identifies your precise fitness level, pure endurance potential, and cardiovascular degeneration. Learn yours if you want to exercise smarter, avoid overtraining, and detect any early signs of disease. V̇O2 max is widely used as an indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness. In 2016, the American Heart Association published a scientific statement recommending that cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), quantifiable as V̇O2 max, be regularly assessed and used as a clinical vital sign. This statement was based on mounting evidence that lower fitness levels are associated with a high risk of cardiovascular disease, all-cause mortality, and mortality rates stemming from various types of cancers. In addition to risk assessment, the AHA recommendation cited the value of measuring fitness for validating exercise prescription, physical activity counseling, and improving both patient management and patient health.
The VO2max test results are then compared against normative data for men or women of a similar age. Maximal heart rate and training heart rate zones are also determined. The full appointment takes about 1 hour.
